De traditie om Die Fledermaus te blijven opvoeren is opmerkelijk. Elk jaar wordt op oudejaarsavond wel ergens in Europa de operette opgevoerd. In Fledermaus Forever zetten acht spelers de traditie op één enkele avond oneindig verder. Net als de personages koste wat kost op het feest in de tweede acte willen geraken, willen deze spelers koste wat kost dit plezierstuk blijven spelen. Met de riemen die ze hebben, passen ze hun rolverdeling, muziek en tekstmateriaal aan om het verhaal steeds opnieuw gespeeld te krijgen. In de drang naar blijven feesten, blijven spelen, zit zowel iets moois als iets zeer triest. Het werk Die Fledermausbelichaamt die drang, zowel in haar narratief als in haar uitvoeringspraktijk. Kortom, het ideale muzikale toneelstuk om een stapje dichter te komen bij het antwoord op het vraagstuk: waarom blijven spelen, waarom blijven feesten?

Every year on New Year’s Eve, the operetta is performed somewhere in Europe. In Fledermaus Forever, eight players continue the tradition indefinitely in a single evening. Just as the characters want to get to the party in Act II come what may, these players want to keep on performing this pleasurable piece at all costs. With what they have, they adapt their casting, musical and textual material in order to get the piece performed time and time again. In the urge to keep the festivities alive, to keep on performing, there is something that is at once very beautiful and very sad. The work Die Fledermaus embodies this urge, both in its narrative and in its performance practice. In short, the ideal musical performance to come one step closer to answering the questions: Why keep on performing? Why keep on partying?
